Camping on and around Long Island
Like any good dad you're dying to get your brood out of the house and into the wilderness. Tents, sleeping bags, campfires, marshmellows = Hero Dad!!! So what's keeping you from getting out there and making all those memories? Oh right, we live in suburban hell and unless you want to set up camp at the nearest strip mall getting the kids to experience the great outdoors is no small feat. Well no need to despair...believe it or not there are great outdoor options all withing a couple hours drive of your home (and a couple sites right here on the island!). While we hear the campiing in the Adirondacks is top shelf, we aren't going any farther than the Catskills.
Gearing up
Before you head outside you're going to need the proper gear (unless you want those family memories to center around your kids plotting your early demise). If you've got tons of disposable cash buring a hole in your pocket head over to REI or Eastern Mountain Sports - two of the most respected names in the business. They have the staff and the stockage to make sure you get off on the right foot. Bring your AMEX Black.
If you're looking for more of a mom and pop feel head over to Camp-Site Sporting Goods in Huntington. Great staff with tons of local knowledge.
You're already a pro and just need to restock your gear? Dicks and Sports Authority have all the selection you'd ever need.
