Freshwater Fishing at Herricks Pond

In addition to the ponds and lakes listed in the link provided on the main page...LI is home to hundreds of small watering holes, many are stocked with fish. I took my main man on his first fishing exursion ever to Herricks Park Pond in the summer of 2014. There is a little wooden pier and the pond was teeming with bluegill. I could barely get one line in the water at a time...the worms were getting eaten so fast. He caught three bluegill. I hooked the first two, he caught the last one entirely by himself (I wasn't even looking, I just turned around and he was proudly holding up his trophy!). Local kids were there fishing for crappie from the bank. Exactly what I wanted from out first fishing trip.
I returned the next year and the pond was completely dead!!! I don't know if the town stopped stocking fish or if something killed them off. According to Fishing Scout people were catching fish early to mid summer. But when we went, there wasn't a fish to be seen (admittedly I wasn't fishing for carp). Here's hoping it's stocked this year.
My point is just get out and look around. More than likely any small pond is at least going to have bluegill. Buy some worms and a bobber and watch your kids have a blast.
