Open Boat Fishing

Bottom line up front...I LOVE open boat charter fishing! What better way to spend quality time with the fam than by jumping on one of any number of fishing boats and letting them take care of the rest. They do the heavy lifting and you get to focus on making memories. I've been out with a few local operators and I really have no preference for one over the other. They all operate more or less the same in my opinion. I've been out on Captain Lou's boat out of Freeport and the Lara Lee from Captree. I had a great time on both. HOWEVER...I will relate to you the one time that stood out amongst the rest. I went out with my 12 yo daughter in late summer 2012. We jumped aboard the Peconic Star 2 out of Greenport early in the am for a half day trip. As I said before, I'm of the opinion that pretty much all of the boats operate the same way...picking one that's right for you will undoubtely be your personal preference. So while nothing in particular stood out to me one way or the other on the Peconic Star...the thing that did stick out to me is that we flat out KILLED the fishing for the entire trip! I pretty much lost count of the number of fish we landed that day (by comparison the most fish I'd bagged on an LI open boat in the past was 5). The weather was great, my daughter had a great time...and we DECIMATED the porgy population off the Conneticut Coast! I don't know if we just got lucky that day or what (more than likely the case)...but the Peconic Star delivered. Now go out and book a trip!
